90s Fashion Trends I’m Here for and Ones That Should Never Leave 1999
So if you know me at all, you know I am a lover of all things vintage and more specifically the 70s and 90s. 90s fashion, shows, and movies heavily influence my life and are a constant source of inspiration. I figured I would break down some stereotypical 90s fashion trends and rate them out of 5! So here we go – 90s trends rated using floppy disks! 💾
90s Fashion Trends
Trend 1: Flared/Wide Leg Jeans
I am HERE for all things flared and wide leg. That being said, if they are low-rise at all, it’s a no from me. I mean, low-rise pants look good on some people for sure but are just not for me lol. 98% of my jeans are straight-legged or flared so obviously I have to give this trend a fabulous rating.

Trend 2: Chokers
If you were to ask me a few years ago when chokers were all the rage I would have said no but for most of my life I have liked chokers. If you do chokers in a bit more of a classier way and not those stretchy things then I am here for it. I do prefer necklaces to be about 8 inches but I’m not opposed to a choker moment.

Trend 3: Hoop Earrings
I am all for an ear full of earrings but there is something about a huge hoop that just doesn’t do it for me. I don’t want to wear some heavy earrings that get caught in my hair or can somehow catch on something. By all means, you do you but I am unlikely to rock this trend.

Trend 4: Crop Tops
As someone who only wears high-waisted pants, I am always here for a crop top. I love a cropped tank, tee or even a sweater. Layering a crop over a blouse or shirt of some kind is a trend that I also want to start playing around with. I feel like if you do that trend right, it can look so dope!

Trend 5: Dungarees/Overalls
I LOVE dungarees! They just look so effortlessly cool! They’re super easy to style and super comfy! If I could wear dungarees everyday I probably would, especially a pair of painter ones. I will deffo be rocking these for a long time!

Trend 6: Scrunchies
As someone who has long, thick hair, scrunchies are where it’s at. I find they stay in my hair longer than a regular hair elastic and also don’t dig into your wrist when you put your hair down. They can also add a fun pop of colour. Scrunchies are another 90s trend piece that I will never give up.

Trend 7: Heavy Duty Combat Boots
I am a Docs girl through and through. I have been wearing combat boots for as long as I can remember and will deffo continue to do so. I like how they grunge up an outfit and I love the juxtaposition that is present when you wear combat boots and a dress.

Trend 8: Birkenstocks
I’ve never owned a pair of Birks and I honestly don’t see myself ever owning a pair. I almost bought some once just cause of how easy they are to slip on but then I saw a pair of Doc sandals and got over that very quickly. Birks just don’t go with a lot of things I own and I’d rather wear some slides than Birks. I don’t hate this trend, but it’s just not for me. I hear they’re super comfy though so i’ll give them points for that.

Trend 9: Platforms
I wish platforms were in style like 10 years ago when I started buying all my Docs. I LOVE platform shoes. They are basically all I buy now but since they weren’t big in the 10’s, there were none on the market. Most of my Docs are just regular because I bought them so long ago and I’m not going to buy a new pair just to have a platform. Unfortunately, Docs last for like ever so I probably won’t have a chance to replace them but maybe when I have a house to myself, I will add the platform versions to my collection. Hint: If you ever want to buy me a present I will wear any platform Doc, Converse or Vans.

Trend 10: Slip Dresses
Honestly, high-key here for a slip dress moment. They are such an easy piece for layering and they add a feminine touch to any look. Since they’re pretty thin, they’re easy to double up as a silk camisole if you tuck them in. I don’t have a ton of slip dresses but every time I go to the thrift store I look for some.

Final Thoughts
Okay so, those are 10 90s fashion trends and how I feel towards them. My love of the 90s might have skewed this a bit as there are very little 90s fashion trends I don’t like when it comes to clothes. Makeup and hair styles, on the other hand, have some iconic 90s lewks that should be kept in the 90s. I am happy to do another one of these posts with some other 90s trends because I feel like I just scratched the surface or even do 70s trends or something like that. Let me know if I missed one of your favourite or least favourite 90s trends!
I made another blog post a few years back all about the 90s trends your parents didn’t let you wear, take a look.
