Spicing Up a Monochromatic Look

Kiana Seitz

Hey my dudes!

I hope you have had a fabulous week so far!

This week I am going to be talking to the people out there that love to wear black or other neutral colours all the time.

I can relate to you because there was a time when my go to look was mainly black. Black is just so easy to style and flattering on people. When your whole wardrobe is black, white, and/or grey you don’t even have to think when styling yourself each day.

Today I am going to show you some subtle ways to add a bit more interest to your look.

Mixing Fabrics

If you really HATE colour and never want to put anything but black or some other neutral colour on then mixing fabrics is perfect for you. In this look I have added some leather and lace to add some different textures. Instead of going for a plain black tee, I went for a tee that had lace at the top from H&M. I also opted for some faux leather sandals from Call it Spring. If it wasn’t like 30 degrees celsius outside the day I shot this, I might have worn black leather pants and paired those with some suede shoes or something like that to add even more fabrics to the look. Moral to the story is, when going for a monochromatic look, you can spice it up by mixing a ton of different fabrics together.

Colourful Accessories

Another way to spice up your look is to add a pop of colour in your accessories. You can opt for a solid coloured bag like the Steve Madden pastel wonder I went with, or you can go for a bag that has a neutral base with pops of colour in it. I bought my Steve Madden bag for around $20 at Winners so I’m pretty happy with that. In my experience, a lot of people who enjoy wearing neutral colours don’t mind a bright coloured bag. If a colourful bag is not for you then you can wear shoes, hats, belts, or jewelry that are colourful or have pops of colour. Try a few different accessories out and see what works best for you.

Patterns

One of my favourite ways to spice up a monochromatic look is to pick a piece of clothing that has a pattern to it. That could be a pair of striped or checked trousers, a plaid skirt, a gingham shirt, or anything else that is patterned. You can keep it pretty lowkey by opting for a black pant with dark grey pinstripes or you can go a little more bold with a white and black gingham shirt like the one in this post.

Bold Lips

If you don’t want to have a piece of clothing or an accessory that is colourful, try going for a colourful lip. When wearing a monochromatic look it is super easy to add a colourful lippie. You can pick any colour you can imagine. You could go for a classic red, a beautiful berry, a dark purple, a vampy red wine shade, a lilac, a bright fuschia, or even a blue lip. The opportunities are endless. My personal go to is a red liquid lip like the one I wore here. Reds can be worn any time of year so it is totally worth it to go on the hunt for your perfect red. Since we are in the warmer months, you might decide to go with a bright fuschia or even a baby pink lip as well.

Next time you are reaching for another monochromatic look, consider these tips to spice it up a bit. That being said, there is something beautiful about a monochromatic look so do not take this as me telling you you should never wear that. This post is just a way to help those of you who wear one colour all the time experiment with new textures, patterns and colours because I firmly believe it is important to jump outside of your comfort zone once in a while.

That is all for today. I hope you have a wonderful rest of the week and an even more fabulous Victoria Day long weekend! I hope it is warm and sunny wherever you are.
